Audio Technica ATH-R70x Review

Plagued by setbacks and delays, we finally got our mits on the Audio Technica ATH-R70x.  And while this headphone does shine as an accurate reference model, there are certain features that may decide otherwise.

Usually, when you wait and wait and wait for something that has been purported as good, you get your hopes up and you get disappointed.  You will not feel that way about the R70x.  It’s a great machine built to deliver the goods.  With a lightweight, almost-all-plastic design, and that Audio Technica cable technology we’ve come to love, it’s hard not to swear by this headphone.

While the price may seem steep to those familiar with more budget-oriented Audio Technica models, the fact that it’s a reference model selling for $350 is nothing short of awesome, especially when you consider how well Audio Technica delivers on the sound quality.

The only drawback one might find to this model is the high impedance of 470 ohms.  Before you can access that sweet frequency range of 5-40000 hertz, complimented by some snazzy 45mm drivers, you absolutely need an amp.

However, once you have the R70x’s lust for ohms well-sated, a whole world of auditory wonders opens before your ears, laying bare the very building blocks of all the universe’s sonic secrets.

Okay, not really.  But man, are they sweet.

So sweet, in fact, that it’s hard not to recommend them to just about anyone.  Obviously if you are looking for a commuting headphone, or something low-impedance, or something built to offer a more pleasant listening experience than a more accurate one, sure, look elsewhere.  But if you’re after a great reference model with spectacular separation and some good bass where it is needed, if it is needed (thanks to those large drivers), then this is a headphone well worth your consideration.
