With a luscious sound that pays particular attention to the mids and highs, the overwhelming audio quality of the Beyerdynamic T90 is nothing short of amazing, especially given the price.
The T90 occupies an odd place in the Beyerdynamic lineup which other headphones seem to avoid – a place of very even (VERY EVEN) sound with perhaps a slightly accentuated mid and high range. The timbres here sound so good, it’s hard not to suspect they might be somehow inaccurate. The bass seems pleasantly downplayed for a Beyerdynamic headphone – definitely still there, but not too loud or throbbing to detract in any way from the rest of the music.
The overall sound is quite deep and spacial, helped along by that open-back design that Beyerdynamic does so well. There’s also the inclusion of their Tesla Technology, which does much to diminish distortion we’ve heard in other headphones. For the purpose of this review, we tested the headphone without an amp. Using one, though, should give you a little more bass, but we can’t imagine it polluting the phenomenal sound all that much.
Really, the high point of the Beyerdynamic T90 is that vast, grand, sweeping sound that gently and lovingly bores it’s way through your skull and makes you hate every other headphone you’ve tried before it. An excellent frequency range of 5-40000 hz means you can hear every not of every instrument perfectly. So perfectly, in fact, that I almost used the word “orgasmically” just now, but I decided to save it for when I describe these headphones in a letter to Penthouse, instead.
Suffice to say, the sound will change you.
The packaging is much what you would expect from Beyerdynamics in this price-range. A standard box and a nice, cushioned case. The build quality too, is much of what you’d come to expect from Beyerdynamic, with the general philosophy being a meticulously sturdy design. With just enough flexibility to perfectly match the contours of one’s head, and plush ear pads of cloth (NOT fake leather, huzzah!) make wearing these babies a dream.
Are there any downsides to these headphones? Not really, no. The biggest obstacle might be a downplayed bass on the T90. but that can be remedied by going with the T70 or another lower-impedance and more mobile-friendly model. The only other thing about these headphones that may not woo potential converts would be the price tag. In no way are these the most expensive headphones around, but similar (and cheaper) headphones can be found in Beyerdynamic’s lineup that may meet someone’s needs just as well.
Still, for the quality and the sound, the price of $649 is fair, especially since you’re getting what you pay for – a premium experience from a premium brand.
