Let's start with the fact that nothing sounds quite like Grado. And once you’ve acquired a taste for it, the sound becomes hard to resist, not only because its so delightfully different from any other headphone, but it literally transports you first row, center stage. While the Grado Rx2 may not be the most versatile headphone with respect to music genre, what it does well, it does incredibly well. Any kind of live recording is presented with astounding detail and realism; the timbre feels so musical, yet entirely organic in part thanks to the maple/hemp housing. As for the rest of the sound signature, you can expect a relatively bright and lean profile, with the kind of evenhanded balance you would expect from a reference headphone. But if you’re become accustomed the hard, almost crunchy sound that you get from some of Grado's metal housing models, you might be pleasantly surprised by the easy tone that this hybrid wood housing offers. Add to that Grado's ridiculously expansive soundstage, and you're on your way to a Kundalini Awakening. The Rx2 may be a “reference” headphone, but there’s nothing clinical about it. Trust that you will be entertained.

A family favorite, the RS2x has been completely redesigned to bring out the full potential of its maple and hemp wood. The housing’s sleeve and ring are made from maple, while a hemp core keeps everything together. We build with wood for its warm and embracing tonal abilities, and the RS2x is an exceptional evolution to the RS2 line.

A New Harmony. X Series Drivers
4th gen X Drivers are here. Specifically tuned for the RS2x wood housing, this new speaker design features a more powerful magnetic circuit, a voice coil with decreased effective mass, and a reconfigured diaphragm. Reengineering these components for our 44mm drivers improve efficiency, reduces distortion, and preserves the harmonic integrity of your music.
A Little Extra. New Cable & Headbands
Along with the speakers, the cables and headband have been redesigned for the RS2x. Housed in a more durable exterior, the now super annealed copper 8-conductor cable reveals even more of your music with improved purity. The new black leather headband features a white-stitched accent.

Our first wooden headphones were built in the middle of the night back in 1994 by John Grado. Wood has been a staple on our workbench ever since. Each RS2x headphone is hand-assembled by our team in Brooklyn - these headphones go from workbench to workbench until they’re ready for your ears. We started building on a kitchen table in 1953, and every experience since then has led to the RS2x.

These headphones are a great compliment to my Sennheiser HD6XX. If you're interested in moving up the ladder of the Grado house sound, the RS2Xs are a great entry. Yes, the midrange is accentuated but there's more bass than I expected from what I'd read in reviews. The headphones are very revealing of the production quality that's in the music, so if you have better recordings or you're sourcing a lot from vinyl/SACDs/hi-res files and the like you're going to be happy. It seems to handle all genres of music well, but the biggest "wow" factor comes from how these Grados present natural instrumentation and vocals. I would highly recommend these for Grado fans and newbies alike.
