LOOK & FEEL
Strauss & Wagner don't just give you one option when you want to change out your earpads. In addition to the standard flannel material, you also have the option of protein skin and lambskin replacement pads. The flannel feels practically identical to how the stock earpads feel, so people looking for something just like the original may want to go for that variation. The lambskin was a favorite of mine, as it was a leathery material that was still soft and comfortable to wear. It made the tight clamping force of the HD 600 series a little less harsh and more bearable for long listening sessions.
Putting on the earpads was quite easy, as the clip-on mechanism was simple to figure out. It can seem daunting to apply pressure to really get them to snap on, but once the earpad clicks into place, it doesn't move and is completely secure. The earpads all include extra foam disks as well, so you can do a complete upgrade on that part of your headphones.
COMPATIBLE WITH...
These earpads offer compatibility with a lot of different Sennheiser models, and ones that are Sennheiser-adjacent. If you have any of the following headphones, these replacement earpads are sure to fit and upgrade your comfort in no time:
- HD 600, HD 650, HD 660S, HD 660 S2
- HD 6XX, HD 58X
- HD 580, HD 565, HD 545, HD 535
EARPADS SOUND QUALITY
The biggest thing to look out for when changing out earpads is how much the sound is affected. Some materials and styles have more influence over the sound than others, and with the HD 600 series, you could see these trends more clearly. I tested the different materials on a few different headphones, swapping out the stock earpads for the replacements and noting their similarities and differences (or lack thereof). For starters, the flannel earpads sounded almost identical to how the headphones sound. The HD 600 and the HD 660 S2 both had the same sonic qualities with the Strauss & Wagner replacement as the original. I liked how soft it was to wear and how it didn't completely alter the sound, since the profile of Sennheiser headphones is something I enjoy.
On the other hand, the lambskin did change the sound profile ever so slightly. It wasn't a crazy alteration, but just enough of a subtle tuning change to make you appreciate the pads more. The treble took a bit of a softer approach, and the bass came through a little faster and smoother. The overall signature has more body and depth, but the detail and natural reproduction Sennheiser is known for still comes through cleanly. The protein skin was another nice alternative that didn't stray away from Sennheiser's signature sound. The material was similar to the lambskin but slightly softer, and it had a slimmer earpad than some other options. The sound was very similar to what the original pads gave you, so you don't have to worry about any potential sound alteration with this variation.

FINAL THOUGHTS
All in all, the Strauss & Wagner earpads are great accessories to your favorite Sennheiser headphones. Not only can you achieve the same style as the stock pads, but you can also switch it up a bit for improved comfort or a slightly altered sound. The black flannel is for the creatures of habit that want a near exact match. The lambskin earpads and protein skin earpads offer a different feel that is just as plush and soft as the black flannel. For those seeking a thinner earpad, the protein skin is a suitable option. If you're all about comfort, the lambskin may be just what you're looking for. Whatever style and comfort level is best for you is sure to be found in one of these earpad options.
