Final DX4000CL Review

2026 is the year for closed-backs. Between the addition of the Strada to the Meze lineup and some new gaming headphones from Beyerdynamic, companies everywhere are trying their hand at some high-end closed-back headsets. One in particular that has caught our eye at Audio46 is the Final Audio DX4000CL, a headphone that is only one of three new products from the Japanese company. This headphone retails for around $1k and has some massive hype around it. In this review, we tackle all the details of the DX4000CL and what makes it a new monarch amongst closed-back headphones.

WHAT COMES IN THE BOX

The DX4000CL doesn't come with much, but it does come with exactly what you need to start listening to your headphones right out of the box. Inside the packaging, you'll find the following:

  • DX4000CL Headphones
  • Silver-coated cable (input: 4.4mm/5 poles, output: 3.5mm/2 poles)
  • 4.4mm to 6.35mm Adapter

DESIGN & BUILD QUALITY

Final Audio has created a signature design that makes their headphones instantly recognizable. It adopts a physical shape first seen in the SONOROUS line, and has now become familiar in all the D series headphones. The DX4000CL takes on an all-black color palette that makes the silver cable stand out, and the brand logo is instantly recognizable on the sides. The headphone itself is very lightweight, which makes long listening sessions all the easier. The textured outer shell makes this headphone resistant to obvious fingerprints that may come with time. The DX4000CL is set to look like a premium headphone for longer.

The DX4000CL is a very comfortable headphone, thanks to the memory foam and synthetic leather earpads. Even while wearing glasses, this headphone was comfortable to wear for long listening sessions without issue. I found the clamping force not as harsh, but it was still stable on the head to wear for long time periods. The DX4000CL cable is thick and made of high-quality silver, terminating to 4.4mm for easy integration into any setup.

LISTENING REVIEW

SOUNDSTAGE & IMAGING

The DX4000CL exhibits a lot of the typical sonic qualities that you would expect out of a closed-back headphone. The darker signature comes from a more pronounced bass response, and the passive isolation keeps the soundstage more intimate than that of an open-back. Still, even with the closed-back privacy and intimacy, you have a very wide image in front of you when you listen to the DX4000CL. You get an honest sound signature that is dynamic and fun as opposed to cold and clinical, making it a great companion to any genre you throw its way. You can do some good analytical listening from the imaging that is presented in the horizontal stereo field, and even some decent dynamics from the vertical height.

Overall, the signature of the DX4000CL is honest and dynamic. It isn't strictly analytical, but the detail and natural sound reproduction allow you to hear all the minute elements in your tracks. I would recommend this more for the casual listeners, for people who want more entertainment from their listening as opposed to analytical work or detailed listening. While you definitely will get the sound privacy you want and a good level of detail, there is a dynamic and colorful flair that makes this more geared towards entertainment and enjoyment as opposed to a mixing tool.

BASS FREQUENCIES

The bass in the DX4000CL is thick and heavy. Luckily, this characteristic isn't the only quality of the bass; instead, you have something with a lot of detail and clarity to make elements easily distinguishable. The low end is filled by the bass frequency extension, especially in EDM and pop tracks that extend even further into the sub-bass region. It gives music the body and thickness you want to really get immersed in the listening, as well as a very good foundation. Everything builds up from the bass, so with this kind of presentation, you are set up for success in the rest of your listening.

MIDRANGE FREQUENCIES

The midrange frequencies are equally as detailed as that in the bass. The DX4000CL's midrange comes forward ever so slightly against the treble and bass to make sure the vocals and other melodic elements are most noticeable in the tracks. Even in the presence of a punchy and forward bass, the midrange still comes forward enough to highlight a lot of instrumental detail. You are able to hear the textures and timbres of instruments clearly and distinctly, so you can appreciate the details that may get veiled in other headphones. I was a fan of all the textures and layers that were presented in the DX4000CL's midrange, which highlighted the depth of the layers and how far back they expanded in the soundstage.

TREBLE FREQUENCIES

At the very top of the signature, you have a very airy treble response that brings a good overall balance to the DX4000CL. In a headphone that is darker in signature and definitely has a larger bass response, it is good to hear the treble push forward to bring a nice brightness and much needed reprieve against all the lows. The treble aids to the sound across the signature, highlighting bright detail and textures so everything sounds cleaned up and pristine. I was impressed with the openness the DX4000CL presented, with the treble having plenty of space and airiness to make everything less compressed and smoother at the very top. The roll-off at the ultra-highs felt natural as opposed to awkward or jarring, so you got a welcome naturalness from the entire signature.

DX4000CL VS OTHER CLOSED-BACKS

Who really competes with the sound signature of the DX4000CL? It is easy to compare it against the other closed-backs released by Final Audio, especially the DX3000CL. The DX3000CL is an excellent value for  a great $600, but it doesn't carry the same dynamic flair that the DX4000CL so seamlessly recreates. If you are looking for something more natural, the DX3000CL does have the slight edge, but for more entertainment and versatile use cases, the DX4000CL is a better valued choice.

From other brands, you might find a good comparison is made between the DX4000CL and the Meze Strada. The Meze Strada is another newer closed-back headphone, with an equally as tight bass and dynamic presentation that is an incredible value at $799. The DX4000CL presents a wider soundstage for all your track elements to live on, and the Meze Strada is just a tad smaller in presentation. You get similar soundstage in something like the Dan Clark Noire X or even the E3, though they have less color and are more geared towards flatness than something more entertaining. The Dan Clark E3 may have more color like the DX4000CL, but it does come at over double the cost, so the DX4000CL is a much more attractive choice.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The Final Audio DX4000CL is a fantastic choice for people looking for a nice closed-back option that is a step above the rest. It retails for just $999.99, making it a great value as a high-end option without crossing into the 4-digit ticket price. You have great sound isolation, premium comfort, and a sound signature that is equipped to handle any genre with ease. You can use the DX4000CL with any amplifier you may already have, and you'll be all set to do some high-quality listening. For those looking to upgrade, the DX4000CL is an option you should heavily consider.

Final Audio DX4000CL Price: $999.99

Over-ear fit style and plush earpads are very comfortable and good for sound isolation.

Excellently detailed sound throughout the sound signature, makes listening entertaining and analytical.

Signature is has strong bass, but the treble comes through to create decent balance to keep tracks from being too heavy
