TONALITE: The world's first earphones for Personalized Timbre

We at final are proud to introduce the world’s first earphones capable of personalizing timbre based on precise measurements of each user’s anatomical features—guided by a dedicated app. By conducting detailed analysis and acoustic simulation of the listener’s individual ear and head geometry, TONALITE reproduces natural timbre with exceptional fidelity, allowing users to experience their favorite music recordings as closely as possible to the artistic intention of the performer or producer.

Previous approaches to audio personalization, whether in academic research or commercial applications have primarily focused on enhancing the spatial impression of sound, enabling more accurate perception of direction and distance. However, such methods benefit only content with immersive binaural sound, which is typically rendered from three-dimensional multichannel audio or recorded using a HATS (Head and Torso Simulator).

In contrast, when listening to music and most everyday content recorded and mixed in a stereophonic loudspeaker environment, specifically two-channel stereo, the naturalness of timbre is what truly matters. Without it, no matter how advanced the spatial reproduction may be, the emotional impact of music is inevitably diminished.

For this reason, final is pioneering Digital Twin Audio Simulation (DTAS), a novel approach designed to deliver the most natural and emotionally engaging listening experience for the music people enjoy every day.

Timbre: the core of musical enjoyment

Timbre defines the overall character of music beyond dynamics, melody, harmony, and rhythm, and is directly linked to the expressive intent of composers and performers. It refers to the tonal qualities of sound that distinguish one source from another, independent of pitch, loudness, or spatial attributes. Even instruments of the same type can produce different timbral impressions depending on the maker, the materials used, or subtle variations in construction.

All music is conceived with timbre as a central element. Even with identical rhythm and melody, performing a piece using different instruments or techniques can dramatically transform the listening experience. Consequently, composers carefully select instrumentation to fully convey the expressive message of their works, while instrument makers craft each instrument to achieve distinct timbral identities. Performers, in turn, refine their techniques to communicate musical intention as faithfully as possible. When music is recorded, these expressive nuances are transformed into electrical signals and often under the supervision or feedback of the composer, performer, or producer to preserve the intended timbral character.

The ability of earphones to faithfully reproduce the timbre embedded in these recorded signals is therefore essential to the very essence of musical experience. By leveraging our Digital Twin Audio Simulation (DTAS), TONALITE achieves natural and accurate timbre reproduction that conventional approaches cannot attain. This enables listeners to experience music in its purest form which is free from conventional audio evaluation metrics and to hear performances as they were truly intended.

Digital Twin Audio Simulation (DTAS)

The DTAS implemented in TONALITE is based on final’s proprietary research in Personalized Timbre. It uses physical data of the user’s body shape, obtained via a smartphone, and processes this data through final’s unique auditory model. This model derives the acoustic characteristics that enable each individual to perceive the most natural timbre, which are then directly implemented into the TONALITE earphones.

In everyday life, the natural timbre we perceive originates from the sound waves arriving at our eardrums, which are acoustically affected by the unique contours of our head, ears, and upper body. However, because earphones deliver sound directly into the ear canal, the natural acoustical effects of the head, ears, and upper body on sound waves are omitted. As a result, the timbre can differ from the natural sound you perceive in everyday environments.

To address this, DTAS scans your physical shape to create a 3D model of your upper body, called the “ Acoustic Avatar®, ” which represents your unique acoustic characteristics. Then DTAS simulates the acoustic effects of your unique body shape through final’s proprietary Auditory Model, a mathematical representation of how the auditory cortex perceives timbre, to create your personalized acoustic profile. By integrating it into the TONALITE system, the earphones are finalized to deliver a personalized, natural timbre uniquely tailored to you.

DTAS scanning

Because each user’s body shape is unique, the sound characteristics derived by DTAS are also unique. Therefore, no conventional tuning of the earphone’s sound can be performed. In other words, DTAS eliminates the need for standard product tuning, as the earphones are optimized individually for each listener.

Faithful timbre reproduction has been difficult —or even impossible—with conventional earphone design methods, which use a single target response curve for all users. As a result, timbre has often been described by the earphones manufacturers using a wide array of tonal impression terms, and impressions can vary widely between listeners.

When listening to live acoustic instruments, most people do not evaluate the performance in terms of timbral impressions or audio-specific descriptors. Instead, they focus intently on the music itself.

In contrast, for the conventional earphones, listeners often instinctively begin evaluating timbre and sound quality immediately, rather than engaging with the music . This happens because the timbre is not accurately or naturally reproduced—artifacts or unnatural components in the sound draw attention, preventing full engagement with the music.

Because the sound characteristics derived by DTAS are unique to each user’s body shape, it removes these timbral issues and artifacts. As a result, when listening through TONALITE, there is no need to critique sound quality or tonal characteristics. Listeners can focus entirely on the music and experience a level of natural, faithful timbre reproduction previously impossible. This enables an entirely new way of enjoying music—immersed solely in the performance, without distractions from audio quality concerns.

Sound of DTAS has been subjectively evaluated by trained listeners and achieved higher scores in timbre perception compared to the Diffuse Field Target Curve and Listener Preferred Target Curve, which are commonly used in earphone design.

DTAS General (Instant Enjoyment): Right out of the box, enjoy our generalized default sound profile. This isn't just a "stock" tune; it's a profile meticulously crafted from our extensive database of timbral personalization data and years of audio research. It delivers a world-class listening experience for all users, no setup required.

DTAS Personalized (Your Ultimate Sound): This is the full TONALITE experience. By completing a series of scans with the dedicated app, you generate a sound profile that is 100% unique to your individual anatomy. This profile unlocks the most natural and faithful timbre possible, tailored perfectly for you.

DTAS Process with Mobile App

The scanning required for DTAS Personalized is performed using the dedicated TONALITE app on the user’s smartphone. The captured data is then sent to our cloud servers, where calculations and simulations are performed to generate the personalized timbre profile.

The app supports 3 languages: English, Simplified Chinese, and Japanese, and is compatible with iOS 17 or later on iPhone and Android 14 or later on Android devices.

The DTAS Personalized profile is stored directly inside TONALITE. Once the setup process is complete and the sound mode is switched to DTAS Personalized in the app, TONALITE will retain that setting. You can then disconnect from your current device, pair TONALITE with any other Bluetooth device, and continue enjoying your Personalized Timbre seamlessly.

As the DTAS process involving sending scan and measurement data to the cloud server for simulation and calculation, and also downloading result into the TONALITE, a stable internet connection is needed during the process.

Ultra-Low THD Transducer

To accurately deliver the personalized sound of the DTAS, the match between the calculated DTAS result and the earphone’s acoustic output is controlled to within 0.1 dB. Such precision is impossible with conventional earphone drivers due to their high total harmonic distortion (THD).

The driver in an earphone plays a critical role in delivering sound that is both accurate and faithful to the electronic audio signal. To evaluate a driver’s fidelity, THD is commonly measured by comparing the difference between the input and output signals; lower THD indicates more accurate sound reproduction .

final has a long history of designing and manufacturing our own dynamic drivers, with a strong focus on minimizing THD and optimizing impulse response. We explore a wide range of materials and cutting-edge manufacturing techniques to achieve these objectives.

f-CORE for DTAS

In 2022, by employing a true CVD diamond dome and our proprietary fabrication technology, we successfully created our first diamond-dome dynamic driver prototype. The results were astonishing—the THD of the driver was nearly zero across the entire audible range. This was an industry breakthrough, as achieving near-zero THD in the low-frequency range had never been accomplished before. With this new prototype driver, we discovered new possibilities in earphone sound. The driver has since been successfully mass-produced in-house and is currently used in final’s latest flagship $2,999 IEM, the A10000.

Inspired by the performance and advantages of this near-zero-THD design, we developed f-CORE for DTAS: a new 10 mm dynamic driver with ultra-low THD characteristics specifically optimized for DTAS and wireless TWS applications. We are proud to say that f-CORE for DTAS is the driver with the lowest THD among all TWS solutions available today.

Its THD is so low that it exceeds the measurement capability of typical systems used on TWS production lines. Therefore, every f-CORE for DTAS driver is measured using a high-precision R&D-grade Audio Precision system during production, ensuring that all drivers used in assembly fully meet the strict DTAS requirements.

Electronic Components

We envision implementing DTAS as a new standard in portable audio. To achieve this, it was essential to develop TONALITE as a true wireless stereo (TWS) earphone, enabling this technology to reach a broad audience.

However, no matter how good the sound, a daily-use TWS device must also include features such as active noise cancellation (ANC), ambient mode, and other essential functions to be widely accepted in the market. Therefore, a core development goal was to make TONALITE’s basic performance among the world’s best in the TWS category.

Each side of TONALITE is equipped with three of the highest-spec MEMS microphones available (Infineon IM73A135), SONY Semiconductor flagship ANC IC (CXD3784), and final Fusion-G hybrid ear tips made of foam and silicone, renowned for superior passive noise isolation, combined with our proprietary in-house ANC algorithms.

With this combination, TONALITE achieves high quality ANC and ambient mode performance, supported by the finest components currently available.
