In short, the Shangri-La Jr. is a remarkable headphone. It combines smooth, brilliant treble that won’t leave you fatigued. While the bass might not be overwhelmingly powerful, it compensates with speed and kick. The midrange is a standout feature, characterized by a uniquely breathy, almost ethereal quality, especially with respect to female vocals. In terms of detail retrieval, the Shangri-La Jr. stands among the best of the best. In addition, the imaging is ridiculously precise and definition is top-notch, as you would expect from a headphone in this echelon. Comfort and fit were also no issue for us. But what sets the Shangri-La Jr. apart is its distinctive electrostatic sound, providing a refreshing contrast to other headphones, even other famous electrostatic headphones, like the Stax models, which significantly differ in character. In fact, in our audio journey, we’ve encountered almost every high-end headphone on the market, but few have left the same lasting impression as the Shangri-La Jr.
