Audio Technica ATH-M70X: Better Late Than Never
The first thing to strike me about the ATH-M70x is the packaging. Right away, I’m impressed by the imposing case that holds the headphones and cables. Handling the headphones, it’s apparent these are a quality build even above the durable-feeling M50x. With aluminum arms stretching down from the padded, solid headband, the fit is at once secure and light.
Once I put on the headphones, and even before I play any music, I’ve already entered another realm.
Music quality is truly righteous. Very even, balanced, with decent separation and near-zero distortion coming together to provide a sound that is crisp, articulate, and surprisingly accurate. Previous M-series models never really impressed me as much as they did my colleagues, but here I can see a truly awesome headphone. To find clarity and accuracy like this in a closed-back headphone, with such a wide frequency range (5-40000 hertz) and a relatively low nominal impedance (35 ohms) is no easy task. Especially when you consider the quality build and quality sound here.
While playing music on as rudimentary a device as an iPhone, bass is minimal. A more pronounced low end (somewhat close to that of the M50x) is attainable through higher outputs.
Apart from a large hard case, you also get a smaller pleather case inside that holds the three standard cables that came with the M50x.
Taking all of this into account, is the ATH-M70x for everyone? No, probably not. Certain people inclined to noticeable amounts of bass might prefer the M50x, the MSR7, or other models outside of Audio Technica’s lineup. However, for those who need a closed-back headphone with good separation and articulate sound with minimal distortion, this is the headphone to consider.
