It’s that time of year again when we can shed the layers of wool coats and duck-feather stuffed parkas we’ve been sporting for the last three months and let the sun hit our skin. In other words, it’s time to list beach body on the top of our (or at least my) to do list. That being said, I’d at least like to do so with smooth audio to keep me going from exercise A to exercise B. Assuming you’d like to do the same, here is a list of the top 5 best sports / workout headphones under $250 to keep your workout productive and full of awesome audio.
JBL Endurance Run 2
To start out our list, we turn to reliable JBL. Great for bass, great for durability, great for the price: JBL really has you covered if you want something quick and simple that is built to last. They have a few sport-centric headphones and earphones, and at a reasonable price. The JBL Endurance Run 2 is specially designed with the marathoner in mind. Its ergonomic shape is ideal for getting a snug fit that won't fall out of your ear during your activity. The cable terminates to 3.5mm, and their easy-to-drive construction allows for a simple adapter to get your sound up and running.
Sound wise, JBL keeps things simple. You don't need much when you're only spending $20. You get the right amount of bass and treble detail so every track is exactly how you expect it to sound. The isolation from the snug fit will allow you to really immerse yourself in your listening and lock in for your workout.
Strauss & Wagner SPW301
If you're not a fan of holding onto your phone while you workout, there are a lot of Bluetooth options that you can look at from many different companies. One that stands out for a great price is the Strauss & Wagner SPW301. This pair of earbuds has wireless connection capabilities, but without the fear of losing the left or right earbud. They have a wire between them to hang around your neck, allowing you to quickly take them off and not have to worry about a charging case.
The shape of the ear tip also ideally designed for physical activity in mind. The upper hook confirms to the inner shape of your ear. These earbuds won't fall out no matter what activity you might be doing. On top of that, the sound quality you get is on par with $50 value. Balanced midrange, punchy bass, and detailed treble: all signs of reliable sound for any workout.
Sivga SO2
To take the wireless listening experience one step further, we turn our heads to Sivga. This company is known for its excellently valued products, and their workout gear is no exception. If you're not a fan of in-ear earphones, the Sivga SO2 is a great option for your next sport workout. This earphone hooks over your head and rests right on top of your ear so you get direct sound without the invasive ear tip. For people with more sensitive ears or struggle to find the right fit for ear tips, this is a great solution that you should consider.
Even the sound on these earphones is to be applauded. There is decent volume so you can focus on your listening, with emphasis on the treble and top end airiness. The bass is a little thin, and you don't get any isolation from outside noise. The Sivga SO2 is great for when people ant to be more aware of their surroundings but still be able to pick their background music. For under $100, the Sivga SO2 is a great budget pick for people looking for their next workout earphone.
Sennheiser MOMENTUM Sport True Wireless
Stepping up in price, we move onto something from Sennheiser. While the MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 is a great pick for everyday listening as well as working out, the price tag is a bit high for people looking for a more affordable option. That's when we turn to the Sennheiser MOMENTUM Sport True Wireless earbuds. As the name suggests, these earbuds take the great sound from the MOMENTUM TWS 4 and optimize them in a new shape that is ideal for sports. You get super clear sound with punchy bass that helps put a pep in your step, and lots of clarity so you can hear all the details in your favorite tracks.
While the out of the box sound is really great on these, the features also make this an ideal choice for athletes. Like the MOMENTUM TWS 4, you get the option to EQ and filter your sound so it's tuned to your exact listening preferences. Additionally, there are sensors that pick up your heart rate and body temp, which is great for when you want to track your fitness goals. At $200, its fantastic value and definitely great for any type of athlete.
Beyerdynamic Verio 200
Rounding out our top 5 list is the Beyerdynamic Verio 200. Like the Sivga SO2, this is an on-ear earphone as opposed to one that provides ANC / sound isolation, so there is a difference in listening experience when you wear these. Beyerdynamic does a great job of creating reference headphones, and that sound translates amazingly well into these earphones. The Verio 200 is lightweight, comfortable, and adjustable to any ear shape for an ideal fit.
The sound on these is truly excellent, and probably my favorite based on the other items on this list. It is wonderfully balanced but still dynamic, with clear mids, rich bass, and airy treble for an all around expertly tuned sound. You may not get any ANC on these, ut you'll be able to stay aware of your surroundings at the gym, on the street, or in your house when you throw these on for a workout. The orange variation is great for people who like late-night runs, as the reflective color will stand out and make the earphones easier to see.
Final Thoughts
Every athlete should have their own backing track during their workout. Whether it's lifting weights, running the treadmill, or doing some calming yoga, there are headphones and earphones out there for you at a price you'll love. The Beyerdynamic Verio 200 or the Sivga SO2 is great for the people who want to be more aware of their surroundings but still get rid of the need for a cable. JBL and Strauss & Wagner will give you great sound at a decent price.
