Audio46's Opinion

It's not a stretch to say that 64 Audio's U12t is one of the most universally loved and respected IEMs in the $2000 price tier. With its balanced yet articulately warm tuning and the classic 64 Audio wrap-around-you-head imaging, what's not to love? As its name suggests, the U12t utilizes 12 balanced armature drivers, which feed into 64 Audio's proprietary Tia tubeless design. Traditional acoustic tubing is forgone in favor of specialized acoustic chambers, which deliver sound from the drivers to a listener's ear completely free of tubular resonance. With its exceptionally natural midrange, smooth yet highly resolving treble profile, and articulate low end that can find ample customization with the included APEX modules, the U12t will likely hold the $2000 throne in the IEM space for the foreseeable future.

64 Audio U12t Universal In-Ear Monitor Overview Photograph

The U12t does it all, delivering immersive sound and impeccable spatial imaging. It's clean highs extend beautifully with a warm and engaging low-end response - just like its custom counterpart, the A12t. Offering reference-level detail, this IEM is among the best for multi-instrumentalists, engineers, sound monitors, and audiophiles.

Each ergonomic shell is machined out of a solid piece of aluminum and finished with an elegant brushed aluminum faceplate.

TECHNOLOGY

Exclusive technologies that challenge traditional in-ear monitor designs to give you the absolute best listening experience

64 Audio U12t Internal Structure

U12t features the following unique technology:

tia

A tubeless design that reduces resonance for a transparent and lifelike sound signature.

The tia system is comprised of three major elements: open balanced armature tia drivers, the tia single-bore design, and tia acoustic chambers. The U12t features two major elements of the tia system: the tia driver and the tia single-bore design.

Tia Driver

An open balanced armature speaker design for realistic resolution and transparency. By opening a balanced armature, the diaphragm becomes fully unobstructed, reducing resonance in the IEM and allowing sound to travel more naturally to the ear.

Tia Single Bore

A huge advancement in eliminating unwanted tube resonance. The large bore itself serves as a sound-shaping chamber and aids the tia high driver in delivering a linear and coherent frequency response. The short sound path provides remarkable high-frequency extension and smoothness. The large single bore also allows for easier maintenance

64 Audio U12t Universal In-Ear Monitors Faceplate Design

apex

Only from 64 Audio, apex alleviates listener fatigue by releasing air pressure sealed in the ear canal. This venting enables musicians and music enthusiasts to listen more comfortably for longer.

pex, or Air Pressure Exchange, is a pneumatically interactive vent that releases air pressure from a sealed ear canal. Apex comes in two variations, m15 (-15dB) and m20 (-20dB).

Alleviate Listener Fatigue

When you seal a miniature speaker in an ear canal, the air inside becomes trapped. Apex relieves this air pressure, allowing the eardrum to move naturally, so you can comfortably listen longer.

Extend The Soundstage

Freely moving air extends the soundstage and provides a more natural listening experience. It also preserves bass frequencies and helps the listener distinguish individual instruments.

Hear Your Audience

Custom in-ear monitors provide amazing isolation and help you hear your mix more clearly and at lower volumes than a wedge monitor or earbuds. Apex lowers decibel levels while preserving the clarity of the sounds around you, so artists on stage can connect with their audience while protecting their hearing.

LID

Enables a consistent, reliable sound regardless of audio source.

LID, or Linear Impedance Design, enables a consistent, reliable sound regardless of what source. This proprietary circuit corrects the non-linear impedances of the drivers, restoring proper interaction with the source and preserving the desired sound signature.

Whether you're a musician plugging into a variety of gear at different gigs or studios, or an audiophile listening from low-impedance sources, LID ensures your IEMs are delivering the desired sound signature consistently.

And like all our IEMs, this model can be used with a wide range of personal audio devices as well as all hard-wired and wireless monitor systems.

Oustanding customer service!

This was honestly one of the best retail customer experiences I've ever had. From the first call where I was given some advice on which IEMs to purchase, that I should have listened, to a very fast and full refund on a return!!

5 stars for service, 3 stars for U12t

Long time Etymotic ER4 user, so take this with a grain of salt. Enjoyed the detail and soundstage of these IEMs but even with the mX module, I found the bass too dominant and the treble lacking impact. More importantly the timbre of the instruments was just off to me. Maybe this is ok for electronic music but not for classical. Fortunately Audio46 has a great return policy, and I was able to exchange these for a Final Audio A8000, which is right up my alley.

An incredibly enjoyable and comfortable IEM

To me these are a prefect IEM. So well balanced. All registers are present and have great character. I drive these with the A&K SP3000 and upgraded the cable to the Effect Audio Eros S at the recommendation of Rigo at Audio46. I couldn't be happier. I have had a lot of different setups at price ranges all over the place. This could be the ultimate setup. Look no further. I can listen to these IEM's for extended periods of time without fatigue. I prefer to listen to music at moderate volumes and I can hear every detail without having to turn the volume higher. I just love how they are tuned. I highly recommend these.

Legendary Sound - Truly Endgame

I am not really good at describing sound. As I venture further down this audiophilic pathway of discovery, I keep learning more about what sounds good to my ears and what doesn't. I have a ZMF Verite Open and an Audeze LCD-5 connected to a Chord Qutest DAC, and a ZMF Pendant tube amplifier. At the time when I got them, I thought sound simply couldn't get any better. They gave me an experience I thought was worthy of bragging about, confident I was near the "summit" of hifi sound. Boy was I ever wrong. Cue the U12t. This IEM has single handedly rendered my home setup useless, and has me now figuring out where and how to sell my over ear headphones and amp. These are really THAT good. After listening to the U12t for a couple weeks, I went back to the Verite and LCD-5. I was SHOCKED at how horrible they sounded compared to the U12t running out of an iFi Gryphon and my phone. The U12t is so perfectly refined; no harshness, yet impossibly detailed. As spacious sounding as my over ears, yet thanks to generous amounts of incredibly textured low end it plays music with authority. No thinness like my LCD-5; no sibilance like my Verite. A technical monster with a beautifully musical soul, this IEM is perfection to my ears. It is tuned masterfully to make ALL my music sound amazing while peeling apart each layer with laser precision. And the fact that this sound quality is portable makes me shake my head whenever I look at my home setup now. And I haven't even touched on comfort, which thanks to the innovative APEX technology (which actually makes a difference) is top notch. APEX basically allows you to customize the level of bass and isolation with the different modules, and prevents vaccuum pressure from building up in your ear canal. And it actually work. This IEM is worthy of the hype. Even after 5 years, this is considered one of the very best IEMs on the planet, and I can understand why. Unbelievable job 64 Audio. What a legend!

Remarkable IEM

The U12t is a remarkable IEM that offers a whole that’s more than the sum of its individual parts. While it’s close to, but not the outright class leader in any one area, it offers a balance-over-all ethos and a refinement that it brings into every track. You can read more about the U12t here: https://smirkreviews.com/2023/04/25/u12t/ I would also like to thank Rodrigo for his expertise and recommendations.
