Micro iDSD Signature by iFi audio

iFi Audio's top-of-the-range desktop/transportable DAC and headphone amp will supercharge your tunes.

Out of this world

Sporting a Space Blue finish and powered by a built-in rechargeable battery, the micro iDSD Signature is a transportable DAC/headphone amp that’s ready for anything that the universe throws at it.

Battery power means it’s ultra-clean with ultra-stable DC power and avoids the pitfalls of AC mains – dips, spike and noise-inducing RFI/EMI pollution.

And with up to 12 hours playing time, depending on the headphones and performance mode engaged, it feels like you could take it to the moon and back.

Finely tuned

Based around two Burr-Brown DAC chips in a custom ‘interleaved’ configuration, the digital engine has four pairs of differential signals – two pairs per channel. This means

  • a lower noise floor
  • improved channel separation
  • finer musical detail and micro-dynamics

The micro iDSD Signature handles up to PCM 768, DSD 512, 2xDXD and MQA. All this is done natively. Both PCM and DSD remain ‘bit-perfect’.

Precision personified

Extensive jitter-eradication technologies are applied to the digital engine, including iFi’s GMT (Global Master Timing) femto-precision clock and the intelligent memory buffer.

The micro iDSD Signature also comes with iFi’s GTO (Gibbs Transient Optimized) digital filter installed. And exclusive firmware available means you can change digital filters as you wish.

Circuit training

With up to 4100mW of power the micro iDSD Signature can drive all manner of headphones with aplomb, from highly sensitive in-ear monitors to current hungry planar headphones.

The signal path has been refined to maximise sonic texture. High spec components featuring class-leading qualities such as low ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance), high stability and low distortion mean top-notch sound quality and maximum musical enjoyment.

Add in the direct-coupled nature of the circuit – no coupling capacitor is present – and the micro iDSD Signature definitely runs rings around the competition.

Versatile sonic tailoring

One size no longer fits all when it comes to quality listening.

The digital stage of the micro iDSD Signature features a variety of filter settings:

  • ‘Standard’, ‘Minimum Phase’ and ‘Bit-Perfect’ for PCM files
  • ‘Standard Bandwidth’, ‘Extended Bandwidth’ and ‘Extreme Bandwidth’ for DSD

The amp stage also has three settings to adjust power and gain. As well as ‘Normal’, you get

  • ‘Turbo’  to ramp up the level of drive for current-hungry headphones
  • ‘Eco’ to dial down the power to suit high-sensitivity in-ear monitors and/or to extend battery life

Complete this with our iEMatch technology that adjusts output level and our XBass+ and 3D+ signature sonic tweaks, and the micro iDSD Signature is flexible to the max.

Get connected

The micro iDSD Signature features two digital audio inputs – USB Type-A and an S/PDIF socket that accepts both electrical, via a 3.5mm connector, and optical signals – adapter supplied.

It also houses a pair of RCA analogue outputs to connect to a pair of powered speakers or a power amp and passive speakers, to act as a DAC and preamplifier.

There is a 6.3mm output for headphones that have a standard single-ended connector (headphones with a 3.5mm jack can be connected using an adapter) and a 4.4mm Pentaconn output for headphones offering balanced connection.

Both headphone outputs utilise our ‘S-Balanced’ output circuitry. This delivers the sonic benefits of balanced connections with all headphone/earphone types – even those with single-ended connectors – cutting crosstalk and associated distortion in half.

  • The Burr-Brown True Native® chipset means file formats remain unchanged. Listen to music as the artist intended in the format in which it was recorded.
  • Doubling the DAC chips results in 3dB lower noise floor and better channel separation. Together with power supply advancements and advanced channel interleaving, the noise floor has been halved.
All of this equals stellar sonic performance.
  • Hi-Res True Native® playback for all music formats from MP3 to DSD512, PCM768 and 2xDXD.
  • Listen to Master Quality Authenticated audio straight out of the box. Connect to Tidal Masters and check the option to stream MQA.
  • This OV series operational amplifier is another example of a top-notch component used to get extremely low noise, low distortion (0.0001%) and wide bandwidth.
  • With output power up to 4,100mW, this headphone amplifier drives all headphones with ease. It has 3 power modes – Eco, Normal and Turbo. Power and gain can be dialled-in perfectly to suit ALL headphones.
  • iFi’s exclusive S-Balanced® circuit delivers maximum performance from single-ended and balanced headphones alike.
  • 3D+ Holographic® delivers an immersive, deep soundstage.
XBass+® delivers a deep, tighter bass sound.
  • TI low-noise ICs offer great unity gain bandwidth, very low noise and distortion, high output drive capability, Common-mode and Power Supply Rejection Ratios of over 100 dB, wide maximum-output-swing bandwidths and high slew rates.
  • iFi always uses the best components possible. These OS-CON™ capacitors provide excellent noise reduction and have a long life span. They are not often found in products costing <US$1000.
  • DirectDrive® equals a direct signal path which means less signal degradation. This direct signal path is unequalled in audio and is the reason why the sound is so ‘true’.

A Music Making Machine

I'm extremely impressed with this small desktop/transportable DAC. My normal setup is a Schiit Bifrost 2 DAC, a DROP THX AAA 789 amp, and a HIFIMAN Ananda headphone. I also use a Sennheiser 6xx headphone from DROP, a 1More triple driver IEM, and a Schiit Asgard 3 DAC/AMP with the AK4490 DAC module installed. I am a new audiophile, but I do have points of comparison for reviewing the iFi micro iDSD Signature. It is wonderful! It may not be as clean and detailed at the Bifrost/THX combination, but it also doesn't cost $1,000, and limited to my desktop. The iDSD is definitely transportable and does support MQA rendering, and has enough power to drive about any headphone you can throw at it. The iDSD Signature just sounds musical. When I compare it to the two other DACs I have, that is the first adjective that comes to my mind. It is smooth, luscious, fun and musical. I love the 3D feature of iDSD. It may not be the purist's preference. It alters the sound. Some have said it is changing the equalization, and the level. That is one opinion, and I understand that opinion, but in my opinion it is doing more than that. On many tracks, I hear the sound stage getting wider and deeper and more instrument separation. It isn't a good choice on all tracks, but it adds something extra to many of the tracks. Of course, if it isn't helping the music, a simple flick of the switch and it is off. The XBass feature is less dramatic and doesn't add anything to the listening experience for me. I'm sure it will with certain headphones and tracks. I have just preferred it off for most of my listening so far. I purchased the unit because I wanted something that allowed me to take the music with me on walks, and to my bed and other areas of my house away from my desk. Even low powered IEMs sound better to me if given a proper DAC and amplifier. I have a nice cellphone but the sound is significantly improved with iDSD Signature. It isn't small like other portable solutions, but it definitely has the power and sound quality and I wanted something to connect to my cellphone so I could stream QoBuz, Tidal and others. All that said, I enjoy keeping it on my desk and using it sometimes instead of my Bifrost and THX 789. It depends on the music and my desire to play with different sounds. The iDSD Signature isn't *****, but I think it is a good value and I'm happy I purchased it. This is also the first time I made a purchase from Audio46. They had the newest Signature version of the iDSD in-stock and other places didn't. I placed the order it an hour or so later they had the product ready for shipment and it arrived two days later to my home across the country. I will gladly purchase from Audio46 again.

This will be an award winner.

As an owner of the black label i always thought that while it sounded good it could use just a bit more detail and larger soundstage. This unit provides that in spades. It's the difference between a good unit and a great unit. It really fires up my Fostex th900 mk2 to levels i have not heard in five years of ownership. If you have a Fostex believe me just buy this. It even does wonders to inexpensive headphones like 1 more triple driver over ears. I cannot wait to see what the absolute sound or stereophile say about it.

Portable Power

As a previous owner of the iDSD Micro Black Label, I really appreciate the refinements made on the Signature. The flush front and rear panels make the unit more compact and the addition of the 4.4mm headphone output is a welcomed addition since all my headphones are terminated in 4.4mm now. The Swiss Army knife functionality from the BL remains with the various power modes, IEM match, and Xbass and 3D options. I can use this from my sensitive IEMs to LCD-3s. The only con is there’s some channel imbalance if you’re super low on the volume pot, like just after turning it on. Once you’re past like 9:30-10 on the dial it’s fine. Forces you to engage IEMatch if you have very sensitive headphones so you get more play on the dial, but again that’s a minor quibble and does’t come into play with most of my headphones.

IFI Micro Signature IDSD..... THUMBS UP

I own the black label version and really enjoy it I couldn't help but pull the trigger on the updated Signature and I have no regrets . Instrument separation and detail is much better and it still has the warm and powerful tone of the original with slightly more mid and treble . Balanced feature is great I'm using it with Aeon 2 [closed] and the HiFiman 1000x [open] with either of these cans the separation and detail can only be described as amazing ! A&K 120 II is my source and although it's a large bundle I use it as a portable carried with a military ammo bag but hey whatever works !!!
