Bluetooth Earhook Comparison Review: iFi GO Pods vs. FiiO UTWS5

When it comes to hybrid DAC/amplifier adapters for in-ear monitors (IEMs), two major players dominate the scene: FiiO and iFi Audio. Both brands have developed wireless ear hook adapters with built-in amplifiers to enhance the true wireless experience for audiophiles. Let's take a deep dive into their features, design, and performance to help you decide which one is right for you.

Design and Build Quality

At first glance, these adapters take very different design approaches. The iFi GO Pods feature an angular, geometric build with a futuristic aesthetic. Their charging case follows the same design philosophy, offering a sleek and modern look.

On the other hand, FiiO’s UTWS5 opts for a minimalist approach. The matte black case is compact, and the ear hooks feature tactile control buttons. The left and right indicators are clearly marked with subtle red and blue rings at the connection points, making it easy to distinguish between them. While both are equally portable, the GO Pods offer a bolder visual statement, whereas the UTWS5 leans towards understated elegance.

Functionality and Usability

Both adapters are designed to provide seamless Bluetooth connectivity, and in practice, they perform exceptionally well. Pairing with devices is quick and effortless.

However, control methods differ between the two. The iFi GO Pods use touch-sensitive controls, while the FiiO UTWS5 employs physical buttons. The UTWS5’s tactile buttons offer a more reliable and precise response, whereas the GO Pods’ touch sensors require some familiarization but become intuitive over time.

One crucial distinction is compatibility. The FiiO UTWS5 requires users to choose between MMCX and 2-pin connectors at the time of purchase, as the connectors are not interchangeable. Additionally, its flat connector surface may not fit IEMs with recessed connection ports. In contrast, the iFi GO Pods provide swappable connectors, making them compatible with nearly any IEM. This flexibility is a major advantage for users with multiple IEMs.

Listening Review

To properly evaluate these adapters, I tested them with the ThieAudio Elixir, Meze Alba, and 64 Audio Solo IEMs. The iFi GO Pods deliver a powerful, detailed sound with excellent clarity, ensuring high frequencies remain crisp without becoming harsh. Their added power output enhances dynamics, making every listening session engaging. Meanwhile, the FiiO UTWS5 provides a warmer and richer tonality, emphasizing smoothness and musicality over analytical precision. While both devices maintain low distortion and a clean signal, the GO Pods cater more to those seeking precision and brightness, whereas the UTWS5 offers a relaxed and immersive sound signature

Final Verdict

Both the FiiO UTWS5 and iFi GO Pods are outstanding wireless adapters that cater to different user needs:

  • Choose the iFi GO Pods if you want maximum power, interchangeable connectors, and premium sound quality with broad IEM compatibility.
  • Choose the FiiO UTWS5 if you prefer a more affordable, streamlined option for a dedicated IEM pair with reliable tactile controls.

Both products are available at Audio46. Whether you're looking for a versatile powerhouse or a sleek, dedicated adapter, you can’t go wrong with either choice.
