CLOSED-BACK DESIGN

TWO SOUND SETTINGS
Two pairs of ear pads are included as standard in order to achieve the ideal sound characteristic depending on the application in question. A pair of velour ear pads provide an open sound and are perfect for mixing and mastering. A pair of leatherette ear pads provide a more closed sound making the headphones more well suited to monitoring applications.

Great compliment to the DT 1990
Everyone has their own set of ears and sound is subjective. I've had the DT 1990 for over three years and love them. Also have the 770 Pro (80 ohm) and the 990 Pro. When I first got the 1770's, I was very impressed with the build, quality, and comfort. Reminded me of my 1990's. Upon trying my first session, I wasn't initially impressed. The sound was much different than what I was used to. The bass was very strong and the mids felt recessed. High's were clean though. It's definitely a "V shape" or "smile" signature. After a couple of days, I wasn't sure that I liked it. But then I learned about the bass ports on the side and used some tacky to cover each one up about 65-70%. This did miracles and I got a similar sound signature of my 1990's. Granted, not as opened or airy since these are closed-backs but it was similar. The 1990's have more space and separation between each instrument and it feels more alive but these also feel alive. They are just more intimate and up close. They're wonderful and I bought a $20 USB-C DAC so I can plug them directly into my laptop when traveling. At home, I use my Fiio E-10K. So, after a couple of months of use, I now love these and think they are a significant upgrade to the DT 770 Pro in every way. These are very detailed which I love and have a clean sound. The bass is vey rich yet never bleeds into the mids. The highs are crisp yet well controlled. Plus, these look cool, like something out of The Dark Knight. Next, I might try Beyerdynamic's new mini-XLR to USB-C cable, we shall see. Huge shoutout to Alex at Audio46 for answering my questions over the phone. Cute
This is my second pair of the Beyerdynamic DT1770, my first pair I got when they came out a few years ago and the box does look different than the the current OEM box, Beyerdynamic has moved to a different presentation of their headphones and image of the company. Why a second pair? Just in case. They are that good to me, along with my Sony MDR Z7 from several years ago.
Detail Monster
Overall, the DT 1770 Pro is an excellent headphone for the price. Comfort is very important to me, and having a large-ish head, excludes a lot of the options out there. This headphone is very comfortable, so much so that I tend to forget it's on my head at times. Regarding the quality of sound reproduction, I have been using these headphones with the iFi Zen signature set 6xx. The most fitting word that I can use as an umbrella to describe these headphones is "detail"...detail monsters. You will hear subtleties that you haven't noticed in songs that you may have listened to 100s of times before. Sometimes these subtleties lie at the outward ends of the sound stage, and this headphone uncovers them. This characteristic actually put a smile on my face a few times..like wow! I never knew that instrument was there before. Additionally, the DT 1770 Pros can reproduce very low frequencies of bass and they really don't even break a sweat. 10hz? no problem..they will pump & dump with no issues. These things are a tank in every sense. This brings me to the build quality..and being a German-made product, you can feel the quality. The choice of materials is well considered for longevity, so I have no issues there. One minor gripe that I have has to do with the leather set of ear pads that come as part of the package. I tried putting them on, but I wasn't successful as the pleather ring that mounts to the headphone was way too tight to fit on the headphones ring. Not sure how long they've been sitting in the box or what, but they seem to have shrunk.
