Audio46's Opinion

The Sundara closed-back edition has garnered significant attention in the audiophile community, and after trying it, you understand why. Apart from the charismatically bright high-end, the closed-back Sundara offers a flat and full EQ profile reminiscent of Beyerdynamic headphones, albeit with a warmer sound signature. And interestingly, these headphones appear to be an excellent choice for home studio enthusiasts, as they can be used for mixing (the level of precision is immaculate) and then easily unplugged for a commute without compromising on performance. The Sundara's unique flashy appearance, comfortable fit, and highly realistic sound balance make it an appealing option at a reasonable price. For someone seeking their first pair of "serious" audiophile headphones, the Sundara closed-back edition may be the perfect candidate, ticking all the right boxes for versatility and performance.

Improved over the open back version

I've owned quite a few closed back headphones, including the ZMF Eikon, ZMF Ori, ZMF Blackwood, Audio Technica ATH-W1000Z, and I've listened to many more such as the Audeze LCD-XC, LCD-2 Closed, DCA Ether-C, Fostex TH-900, and this humble $400 headphone is the most impressive of them all. It doesn't have the bass of Audeze but has better bass than most of the others, it is more detailed than all the others except perhaps the Ether-C (can't do direct comparisons), and to my ears has the best balanced sound signature of them all. The treble doesn't fall off into a void like Audeze (I hear it up to 18 KHz), bass is linear, natural, and extended (20 Hz), mids are both very transparent and detailed and have no odd characteristics, imaging is some of the best I've heard in a closed back. This headphone does everything right and has no real weaknesses in sound. It is also improved over the open version (which I also own) due to the stealth magnets and perhaps other changes: the Sundara Closed Back is more efficient and easier to drive, it is more detailed, vocals are more clear, treble is more linear, and imaging is actually more precise surprisingly. It is also more forward, not sharing the laid back character of the open one. This is just amazing for the price, and the efficiency is such that it can be driven off of anything. I use this when traveling with a Chord Mojo 2 which drives it with tremendous authority, but I did my A/B testing with the open back Sundara on my high end system at home which includes a Bricasti M1 SE and HeadAmp GS-X Mini and Norne balanced cable. Comfort is fine as well - large adjustment range, thick comfortable pads that aren't as hot as fully leather ones, it uses 3.5mm connectors instead of the brittle 2.5mm, the only downside I can find is that the cups squeak a bit when looking up or down.
