Audio46's Opinion

The SRH1840 from Shure delivers a a super accurate, yet satiating audio experience with its deep and detailed low end, clear and accurate midrange, and smooth high frequencies. The bass maintains good control, ensuring no bleeding or muddiness. Vocals are particularly outstanding in the midrange, creating an up-close and personal connection with the listener. The high end leans slightly bright but remains controlled and detailed. The soundstage has good depth and placement, and it stays centered at the head, never exaggerating the sense of space. And overall, the SRH1840 impresses with its build quality and highly detailed sound at a very reasonable price, making it a fantastic choice for reference listening.

Great monitor headphone but not for everyone

Great monitor headphone but not for everyone. Really a nice tool for audio monitor but not for audiophile because of its flat bass.

The best monitor headphone

I bought it for my friend. He is a audio worker. He saids it's the best one for professional studio work though I don't really get the sound because it's kind of flat and have few bass. But it's detail is incredible more even compare to my L5000.

My search is over

I own the Senn HD569 and HD558, but kept searching for something more äudiophile¨sounding. The 558 is easy listening but does not do justice to my IDSD Black Labels transparency. After much research I pulled the trigger on this SRH1840. At first I thought it was a bit bright or analytical and not so easy listening as the 558, but as it broke in I found it very flat and not base heavy with the lows bleeding into the mids, and muddying them up. I am 75 and have a 4,000hz hearing loss so I am not in a position to judge whether they are ¨bright¨or not, but friends have also compared both and agree with me as to the transparency, detail, and dynamics when driven with proper dac/amp. It annoys me to see people complain about the phones when they drive them with sloppy equipment. Its like a site on Internet which plays mp3s vs HD files and says that the majority of the people cannot hear the difference in a blind test. Off course they will sound the same if you are listening through your $1 dac in your computer or phone, compressed so as to be able to transmit it. You would have to compare it using all high quality equipment. And so it is with this 1840. Don't bother to order it if you are going to try it out with your computer audio out, then give it 2 stars, and send it back. They are so revealing that it will be easy to hear how good the rest of your chain is. After using them for 3 months now and going back to my HD558s I cant believe how much I was missing. Some don't believe in break in and say that your brain adapts to the sound. That may be true to some point, but how about my friend who did not use them during the break in period, and could immediately hear the difference? Some have said that the srhs are not head phones that ¨wow¨you, but as time goes by they grow on you, and then you cannot go back. Now I can hear the difference between my Musical Fidelity V90 dac, and the better quality dac in my IDSD, between my Schiit MAGNI 2 Uber and the better quality amp in my IDSD Black. Because of my hearing loss I play my music much louder than normal, and can testify that even at these high levels there is no distortion whatsoever. You can drive them hard and never hear any distortion. To sum up: Now I just listen and enjoy my music, and have no interest whatsoever in looking for something better or new. To get anything better you would have to pay over $1,000 for maybe a HD800. I havent heard them or wish to hear them. My search is over.
