The main chassis is precision-milled from 99.99% pure oxygen-free copper with gold plating, while the rear chassis uses 99.96% pure OFC with direct gold plating. A direct-coupled structure with low-resistance, gold-plated screws helps stabilize grounding, while an additional OFC milled block shields the digital circuitry from interference.

Inside, dual large solid high-polymer capacitors provide dedicated power reserves for the digital and audio sections, complemented by Sony's custom FT CAP3 capacitors and an ultra-low-noise LDO regulator. A high-purity 4N copper coil supports balanced output, while thick KIMBER KABLE wiring connects the amplifier to the balanced headphone jack to help minimize external noise and signal loss.

Further refinements include two low-phase-noise crystal oscillators for precise clock stability, gold-containing solder, and a 10-layer low-dielectric circuit board with copper-filled vias. An optimized layout separates the audio circuitry from the power and digital sections, helping preserve clarity, instrument separation, and soundstage precision.

In addition to the DSD Remastering Engine and DSEE Ultimate, the WM1ZM3 offers a range of customizable sound settings. The Vinyl Processor recreates subtle characteristics of analog playback, including low-frequency resonance and surface noise, while the DC Phase Linearizer simulates the phase characteristics of analog amplifiers with six selectable settings.

A 10-band equalizer, Dynamic Normalizer, and Direct Source mode provide additional listening flexibility. The Walkman also supports MQA audio file playback and compatible 360 Reality Audio content for an immersive listening experience.

For wired listening, the 4.4mm balanced headphone output separates left and right signals to minimize interference and signal deterioration. Native DSD playback is supported through the balanced connection, while DSD playback through the unbalanced output is converted to PCM.

Long battery life and Usability

The larger 5.5" HD touchscreen display offers a smooth and responsive interface, while its long battery life allows you to immerse yourself in your music for up to 33 hours of 96kHz FLAC High-Resolution Audio playback without compromising on sound quality.

The built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery takes approximately 4.5 hours to fully charge. Actual playback time varies depending on the audio format, connection type, playback application, and settings.

The customizable Walkman Home Screen provides easy access to your music, while the larger album artwork and intuitive navigation make browsing more enjoyable. Music can be organized and searched by artist, album, genre, composer, playlists, folders, and more.

The circular machined-metal headphone-jack surround adds a refined appearance, while the leather-textured rear pad provides a comfortable tactile experience and prevents direct contact with the OFC rear chassis. Intuitive physical controls make operation convenient without relying entirely on the touchscreen.

Inspired by classic audio equipment, the Walkman features an analog-style volume interface and a distinctive cassette tape screensaver that changes its appearance depending on the music codec being played. The USB Type-C port supports USB 3.2 Gen 1 for fast music transfers, while the microSD slot expands storage beyond the built-in 256GB.

Sony has also eliminated plastic from the WM1ZM3's packaging materials as part of its efforts to reduce environmental impact.
