Audiophiles talk incessantly about sound stages, resolution, and detail retrieval – all well and good. Still, today we're diving into the hedonistic basics by getting into the best bass-heavy IEMs for a good old brain-shaking listen. We'll cover a range of price points to ensure there's something for everyone. Let's see what we got.
Under $500
Sivga Nightingale - $229
Starting our list with something in the $200 range, Chinese company Sivga offers a pretty nice bass-forward option for people shopping on a budget. The Sivga Nightingale is a planar magnetic IEM that is tuned on the warm side and has a pleasant amount of detail to give you entertaining listening in every frequency range. The planar magnetic driver gives you top-end detail that balances out the warmth in the rest of the signature, and you still get good clarity at the bass end too. There isn't a lot of muddiness or instrumental wash-out that you might expect; instead, there is punch and drive that is relaxed for easy, all-day listening.
With a 4.4mm termination to go with some high-end portable DAC/Amps, the Sivga Nightingale is a great introduction to a more bass-heavy IEM. The raindrop shape is a comfortable fit, and the 2-pin connector allows you to replace it with any upgrade cable with ease and stability.
Beyerdynamic DT IE Series - $499.95
Moving up, Beyerdynamic catches our attention next. They are most known for their over-ear studio headphones, but their recent in-ear series is great for musicians and audiophiles alike. They have the DT 70 IE, which is geared towards critical listening, and it delivers a fairly neutral sound that is dynamic and detailed across the frequency range. For people who want a lot of bass, I would recommend they check out DT 71 IE, which is tuned specifically for bass and drums. You get an extra boost in that sub bass range and a little extra sparkle on the top end to balance it out, allowing you to focus on the bass in your listening.
Other IEMs in the DT IE series, like the DT 73 IE and the DT 72 IE, are good for bass as well, but you'll find more midrange presence and high-end clarity rather than the impactful bass you might be looking for.
Under $1000
Noble Audio Van Gogh - $699
One new earphone that is certainly worth noting is the Noble Audio Van Gogh. Noble Audio has a lot of great IEMs for the audiophiles that don't fear a price tag, but the Van Gogh is only $699 and impresses on a first listen. The 4-driver arrangement brings you a U-shaped signature, where the bass is tight, punchy, and full to give you a driving force in every track. The timbral detail you get as well balances the punchiness of the bass and allows for space at the top end, so you don't have a compressed soundstage. For an IEM of this size, you wouldn't expect it to deliver that kind of power in the bass. The dynamic driver is effective in giving you that slammy bass sound in all your favorite tracks.
The Van Gogh is a great mid-range option to showcase great sound and great visual aesthetics. It is perfect for people with smaller ears, and the Starry Night-inspired shell is unique yet nostalgic. It's easy to drive and a great match for any portable setup with a 4.4mm output.
FlipEars Legion - $849
A favorite at Audio46 for its impactful bass is the FlipEars Legion. This tribrid IEM is proof that less is more. The Legion has one dynamic driver, one bone conductor, and one electrostatic driver to give you a signature that is balanced across the frequency ranges. The most memorable part of the signature is the impactful bass, which is felt as much as it is heard. The EarQuake bone conductor driver does a brilliant job in giving you a slammy bass sound that is thick and heavy yet still controlled, full of detail and texture to make it the star of any show. You get excellent timbral detail and clarity across sub-bass and low-end frequencies, so you get the most out of the low end in any genre.
The FlipEars Legion impresses in its bass response just as much as the aesthetics. The rose-plated brass is made with jewelry casting techniques, and all the intricate details are hand-painted to give each pair of IEMs a unique finish. These beautiful monitors are less than $1000, and the sturdy braided cable makes it the perfect visual accessory as well as an audiophile listening experience.
Over $1000
Campfire Audio Bonneville - $1,399
Now we enter the $1000+ range of IEMs. There are a lot of IEMs that bring excellently balanced sound signatures, but there are plenty that will give you the impactful bass you are looking for. Campfire Audio's Bonneville is a great example of this. The hybrid driver design is similar to what you find in the Van Gogh and the Legion, this time with added refinement to take your listening to the next level. The dynamic driver keeps the bass tight and punchy, and it has enough body to lay a good foundation for the rest of the frequencies to build up from. The balanced armature drivers are excellent for giving you detail and clarity in the top end, and they make the bass less heavy. You don't have to worry about an overwhelming or washed-out bass; instead, it is controlled, detailed, and full of life.0
Campfire Audio's Bonneville retails starting at $1,399, but you can upgrade to include all the different terminations for $1,599. The Time Stream cables are sturdy and durable, with MMCX connections for an ideal and adjustable fit around your ear. The IEMs themselves are on the bulky side; small ears may find them a bit uncomfortable and fatiguing for long-term use. However, the ergonomic shape molds well to the shape of your ear for a secure seal.
Empire Ears Triton - $1,799
Another company that implements bone-conductor drivers is Empire Ears. The Triton is a high-end audiophile-grade IEM that impresses with stellar design both visually and sonically. This IEM has a tribrid configuration, stacking a subwoofer, bone conduction drivers, and balanced armatures for a sound signature that is detailed as it is thick in bass. The low end has a unique rumble from the subwoofer that can practically be felt in bass-heavy genres, like EDM and pop. The balanced armatures come in to help balance out the weight of the bass, cleaning it up with textural detail that carries from the sub-bass to the top end frequency range.
Empire Ears is known to produce high-quality IEMs, as seen in other models like the Raven and the Odin. While they do implement subwoofer drivers and some mix of balanced armature or electrostatic drivers, they don't have the same drive that the Triton does in the low end. The blue design with gold details makes it elegant and embraces the luxurious vibe.
64 Audio U18t - $2,999
For the people who like reference sound with a hint of flavor, look no further than 64 Audio's U18t. 64 Audio is great for reference IEMs, and their custom line is a favorite amongst musicians looking for optimal comfort on stage or in the studio. The U18t shows how you can combine that natural sound with a punchy and driving bass, catering to the listener who wants something a step above reference-grade. The low end in these IEMs is natural with an extra bit of drive. These IEMs have 18 balanced armatures; it seems like a lot, but you get finely tuned sound with excellent clarity in every range.
The U18t is a perfect choice for when you want one IEM to do it all. Good bass, stellar detail, comfortable fit, plus accessories to last. The U18t is great for people who already have the U12t and are looking for a step up in quality and a little more punch in the bass. For $3000, this flagship IEM will last you til your next huge upgrade.
