Audio-Technica Headphone Guide

When we think of leaders in the headphone equipment world, Audio-Technica is certainly a name that is brought into the conversation. For 50 years, they've created products that are used throughout the industry in a number of different environments: musicians, production, reporting, etc. For reliable headphones that aren't too expensive, we're always recommending a pair of Audio-Technica's for their sturdy build and trusted sound. Fun fact: they were the chosen brand to supply all the equipment for the Paris 2024 Olympics!

Here at Audio46, we have a wide selection of headphones from Audio-Technica. From the M-series to the limited edition selections, with Bluetooth and without, there is a lot to choose from with this brand. We've listed out the selection of headphones we carry from them here, where you can read a bit about what each has to offer and find the best fit for you.

Audio-Technica M-Series

Audio-Technica ATH-M20x + ATH-M20xBT

To start off the M-series, we have the reliable Audio-Technica ATH-M20x. It is one of the earliest models in the series, and stands as the most affordable option for people looking for wired over-ear headphones. At $49, you can't go wrong with a simple wired connection and even sound signature that will aid you in any sound production project you may be starting up. It comes in black or white, and also has a Bluetooth version -- the ATH-M20xBT -- that retails for $79. The same great sound is now taken wireless, and for under $100, it's a good price for people starting on their headphone journey.

Audio-Technica ATH-M30x

m30x_480x480

Next in line is the Audio-Technica ATH-M30x. It goes for $69, and has a slightly elevated sound from the previous model. It doesn't come with a Bluetooth model to match, but it does have an increased frequency range to get a more natural and expanded sound. Its power input is much greater and can withstand higher and more elaborate systems. The overall look is not much different than the M20x, but for people looking for a slightly elevated sound that is still in budget, this is a great option.

Audio-Technica ATH-M40x

m40x_480x480

The ATH-M40x is a step up from the previous two. There is another input power increase, as well as an expanded frequency response that is made for mixing engineers. The flatter sound and wide stage allows for mixing engineers to get the desired sound they want. People are normally drawn to the next model up, but the M40x remains the better choice for mixing and post-production creativity. The closed-back design also lets them work on the go, and not get bothered by outside noise distraction.

Audio-Technica ATH-M50x + ATH-M50xBT2

m50x_480x480

This model is the ultimate reliable headphone. The Audio-Technica ATH-M50x is the studio standard, and has been looked at as the benchmark for studio monitor and live sound headphones. Some people think the M50x is best for mixing, but it really thrives in live mixing or DJ settings. It is a more dynamic and bass heavy signature, which allows any project to be elevated and smooth as a final result.

This is the other model that comes with a Bluetooth counterpart: Audio-Technica ATH-M50xBT and the ATH-M50xBT2. These Bluetooth models come with serious upgrades from the M20xBT, like updated Bluetooth codecs and more stable connections. Going from the M50xBT to the M50xBT2, you get a few stylistic and construction differences to make the headphones more compatible with the latest technology. You get fast-charging, 10 more hours of battery life, USB-C charging, and multipoint pairing. The overall sound signature doesn't differ from that of a wired connection.

There's always new limited edition colors coming out. Check out all the available M50x(BT) colors.

Audio-Technica ATH-M60x

m60x_480x480

The ATH-M60x takes a bit of design turn when we look at this compared to the other models. It sports a more on-ear design as opposed to over-ear, making it look more on par with something like a Grado headphone. The change in design allows for a better ear seal and isolation during listening. The sound of the M60x is clean and crisp, with a slightly narrow soundstage. These closed-back headphones are wonderfully dynamic and probably the most characteristic of all the M-series. With these going for $220, they definitely stand out as a quality pair.

Audio-Technica ATH-M70x

m70x_480x480

This model is at the very top of the M-series chain. The Audio-Technica ATH-M70x is an excellent pair of headphones, spanning an extended frequency range with excellent sound reproduction. With increased input power, sensitivity, and lower impedance, these headphones are top of the line for audio monitoring. It has a dynamic sound while still being balanced and level, making it a great fit for people who want to do some on-the-go mixing or DJ monitoring. At only $300, these are great competitors for other headphones to stand up against.

Audiophile Models

Audio-Technica ATH-R70x

r70x_480x480

Audio-Technica doesn't just make headphones for studio monitoring. They also cater to the precise listener and budding audiophile, and that's where the ATH-R70x comes in. This open-back model is a high impedance headphone, which means it requires quite a bit of power to drive and get the full extent of the headphone. The extended frequency range is excellent at reproducing sound with stellar accuracy, and the lightweight design is great for long listening sessions. People looking for quality sound on a budget will be surprised to learn these retail for $350, and should definitely get their hands on them while they can.

Audio-Technica ATH-AP2000Ti

ap2000ti_480x480

The other audiophile models stay as closed-back designs. To look at some of those models, we start out with the Audio-Technica ATH-AP2000Ti. This metallic and reflective pair of headphones stands out in a crowd, and it showcases excellent audio quality as well. The on-the-go design pairs well with the brighter response of the headphones, leaving any heaviness out the door in both wearing style and frequency response. For people looking for a driving bass, they likely won't find it here; still, it makes for a great pair of cans to capture incredible detail.

Audio-Technica ATH-AWAS

AWAS_480x480

The Audio-Technica ATH-AWAS is an aesthetically brilliant model, made from Japanese cherry wood to create a beautiful red housing the dynamic drivers are encased in, made with a diamond-like carbon coating. These headphones have excellent balance and clarity that is expected from Audio-Technica. The soundstage is rather narrow, and the low end is accentuated with clarity rather than body. This balance remains consistent throughout a host of different genres, so for people looking for a more relaxed and mellow sound profile, this will be a fantastic match.

Audio-Technica ATH-AWKT

AWKT_480x480

Made from Japanese striped ebony wood, the Audio-Technica ATH-AWKT is a stunning closed-back headphone that impresses with the look alone. While the style may be similar to the ATH-AWAS, this headphone has some different construction that gives it a more unique sound. It has a 53mm dynamic driver, with additional German Permendur magnetic circuitry expanding the soundstage to a wide image. The comfortable ear pads make these great for long listening sessions, and the wide stage and deep lows make this great for bassheads. The ATH-AWKT is certainly at the top of people's budget, but the technology and sound that comes from it makes it worth the price.

Limited Edition

Audio-Technica ATH-M50x LAB Series

LAB_480x480LAB_BT_480x480

This limited edition model came as a result of a contest amongst Audio-Technica listeners. Audio-Technica reached out to the fanbase and frequent listeners, and they had them submit designs that would be used on their latest edition. The LAB series was designed with bright orange headband, grey, and blue accents that make it stand out as a piece of art and fashionable wear. The LAB series is modeled with the ATH-M50x and ATH-M50xBT2 hardware, making it a standout in aesthetics and reliable sound.

Audio-Technica ATH-M50x IB Series

IB_480x480

The Audio-Technica IB series takes the signature ATH-M50x and puts them in a stunning ice blue color. You're getting great sound and optimal comfort, and at the same time, you can get a nice teal color that stands out above the rest. These retail for slightly more than the regular ATH-M50x, but still deliver sound that everyone knows and loves.

Audio-Technica ATH-WB LTD

WB_LTD_480x480

This limited edition headphone is a bit different from the others. It comes as a completely new design, with a tri-wood closed back ear cup design that is gorgeous on person as it is on a screen. The Audio-Technica ATH-WB LTD celebrates the 60th anniversary of Audio-Technica and all the headphones that have been made over the years. The wooden housing is meant to replicate a unique acoustic space, one that might not match the room you are in. With a pronounced midrange and the excellent detail, the ATH-WB LTD delivers in giving listeners a memorable listening experience.

Other Models

Audio-Technica ATH-GL3

GL3_480x480

As a gaming headphone, the Audio-Technica ATH-GL3 is a great pair for people looking to ball on a budget. At $99, this is an excellent choice for people looking for something that will last them a while and still deliver quality audio to their game audio. The GL3 is a closed-back headphone, giving great isolation and immersive experiences on a wide soundstage. The stereo imaging is something to note, where you can accurately place instruments and other elements of tracks in the stereo field during gameplay.

Audio-Technica ATH-WS550iS

WS550iS_480x480

As part of their Solid Bass line, the Audio-Technica ATH-WS550iS comes in with one very special feature: accentuated bass. Not only is the sound signature a classic and on par with other Audio-Technica headphones, but it is also incredibly stylish! The plush ear pads are designed to give listeners optimal comfort, and the robust build ensures durability.

Audio-Technica ATH-WS770iS

WS770iS_480x480

This is another addition to their Solid Bass line of headphones. The Audio-Technica ATH-WS770iS is another great headphone for people looking for more impactful bass in their tracks, and takes a step up from the ATH-WS550iS in terms of clarity and design. It opts for a sleeker design with a darker color scheme and thinner earpads. It still delivers quite the impact and is still a great headphone for people looking for optimal comfort during their listening.

Which pair is right for me?

So after reading all this, how do you know which Audio-Technica headphones to choose? To know which model is right for you, you have to look at what aspect matters most to you. It could be budget, sound quality, comfort, or perhaps something else.

For people looking for cheap headphones to do basic monitoring, the earlier M-series models are a great choice. The Audio-Technica ATH-M20x or the ATH-M30x is a neutral headphone that retails for right under $100, so you won't be breaking the bank for a decent pair of headphones. If you want a little more bass in the headphones, the headphones coming from the Solid Bass series are excellent upgrades to those original models.

If you want open-back headphones, the Audio-Technica ATH-R70x is a great pair for people looking for a budget headphone. A lot of open-back headphones will reach quite high prices for good quality, but Audio-Technica has made one for people just starting to break out into the game.

Music producers and DJs will love the ATH-M40x and ATH-M50x, respectively. The neutral responses coming from these headphones are great for starting with a blank canvas for music creation, and the extra dynamics in the M50x will give DJs that extra flavor in their mixes.

Audiophiles will love the Audio-Technica ATH-AWAS and ATH-AWKT, both for the beautiful aesthetics and stunning detail in the sound. They are excellent pairs to add to any collection.

Even those looking more for aesthetics than anything, the LAB series or the IB series are all great for delivering good sound and looking stylish while doing it.

Summary

To conclude, there is a pair of Audio-Technica headphones for everyone. For people looking for a stylish pair, a functional pair, or even a gaming pair. I highly recommend testing out some models that catch your eye and see which works best for you. At the end of the day, your ears will be the final deciding factor!
